“Empathy involves stepping into another person’s shoes in order to gain an understanding of their emotional experience, and then conveying our insights to them accordingly”.

As an initiative to improve on Staff Development, St. George's School organised a Psychological First Aid Workshop for its teaching staff on the 3rd of March 2023. The aims of this workshop were to educate teachers on the importance of Emotional First Aid and how to implement this method of communication between teachers and students in the school environment. 

Alister Tieng, a graduate in the Bachelor of Arts in Humanistic Counseling from the University of Nottingham and a current psychotherapist at Relate Counselling presented the workshop, sharing his own personal and professional accounts when dealing with issues pertaining to mental health among students. He touched on topics such as depression, self-harm, anxiety and panic, which, although previously considered taboo topics, have now become a social norm, especially among teenagers. Alister shared various methods and tips for teachers on how to address and intervene when presented with situations that require counselling in the above mentioned areas.

All attendees of the workshop were notably engaged throughout the session, as evident from the question and answer session, where teachers shared their own personal thoughts on the matter, as well as their takeaways from the workshop.   

On the morning of 28th February, 2023, the Parish Hall was filled with excited recipients and proud parents as St. George’s School held the Excellence Results Awards for the Year 6 and Year 11 class of 2022.

To open the event, the principal, Mr. Janidi Jingan, took the opportunity to pay tribute to the hard work of everyone involved – students, teachers and parents – in spite of the difficulty of the previous year’s lockdown. He also expounded on the drive of the school in providing a “favourable environment essential for academic success.”

The event celebrated the achievements of six PSR students and 38 ‘O’ Level students. In true St. George’s fashion, no event would be complete without upbeat dance performances which were carried out by both primary and secondary students.

St. George’s School is proud to recognize the achievements of their students and hopes to foster even more bright minds in the coming years.

As part of Continuous Staff Development, a workshop on How to Combat Misinformation & Disinformation was held on 11 Feb 2023 for teachers. It was conducted by Ms. Natasha Halim, a Master Trainer under the ASEAN Digital Literacy Programme (ADLP) that aims to combat misinformation and disinformation in Southeast Asia by providing digital literacy training.

The 2-hour workshop was tailored to focus on the Fake News in Social Media, Cyberbullying and Netiquette. Attendees were introduced with the common fake news and online scam circulating nowadays, varieties of technique on how to identify them and what should we do to handle them. In addition, cyberbullying among students and proper netiquette when communicating through social media was also highlighted during the workshop.

It was an extremely informative workshop where teachers went home better equipped with the knowledge on how to verify the news and information circulating on the internet and social media as well as the responsibilities and etiquettes that need to be followed whenever using any of the online platform.

The workshop was closed with the introduction of Talian Harapan 145 and MKM (Majlis Kesejahteraan Masyarakat) or Brunei Council on Social Welfare. Talian Harapan 145 is a public helpline set up by Ministry of Health to help the public in Brunei Darussalam with emotional support, such as mental health, stress or anxiety as well as cyberbullying. Meanwhile, MKM is a group founded with the mission to aids vulnerable and underprivileged groups in Brunei and beyond. The prize giving ceremony for the National Calligraphy Competition jointly organized by The Society of Chinese Writers, Calligraphers and Artists, Brunei Darussalam and Chung Ching Middle School was recently held at Indah Biru Lugu Industries Banquet Hall on the 18th February 2023.

Students of St. George's School participated in the event and won 3rd place! The winners are as follows:

Primary Category: Kieian Tia Zhing Thern and Chee Zhi Xuan

Secondary Category: Mable Sim Jie Yi

Teachers who were involved also received an award for their contribution of their untiring efforts to the winning students.

We would like to congratulate the winners who had participated in the competition, to carry forward the spirit and culture of calligraphy!

Once again, St. George’s School was invited to represent Brunei to attend the Asian Young Leaders Travel And Learning Camp (AYLTLC) held in Singapore from 2nd to 6th February 2023.

St. George’s School has annually been sending students to Singapore to take part in this training. This year, our student leaders actively participatedd, create a niche and established an impressive reputation that made the organisers decide to make sure that St. George’s School will represent Brunei in this prestigious training held every year.

Leaders from different countries such as China, Hongkong, Taiwan, Japan, India, Africa, South America, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines gathered to share their talents, explore Singapore together, discuss global issues and come up with effective solutions for said issues.

Our St. Georgians, along with other leaders, were provided opportunities to listen to and learn from the speeches of credible speakers, who talked about the development of transportation in Singapore. Another luminary in his own field, Professor Maurizio Peleggi, a History professor, introduced to the participants inspiring leaders from the past and at present, who are worthy of emulating.

Touring around Singapore was one of the highlights of this training, as students were brought to interesting places the country’s boasts, such as The Marina Bay Sands, Orchard Road, Marina Barrage, The NE,Water and they were also toured around the National University of Singapore.

The last of the seminar was a test for all the leaders. Students were told to choose a global issue, discuss its effects, and come up with solutions in tackling them. Hence, leaders put their heads together to intelligently discuss their chosen issues. Within the given time, they were able to accomplish the challenge given to them and documented their problems and the solutions. After, the judges reviewed the video presentation where the problems and solutions were discussed. The leaders were then awarded.

It was a proud moment for St. Georgians as their efforts were recognised. The awards received by the leaders from St. George’s School were the Most Creative Award for Ayan Ahmed Zakai, Dk Nur Amisha Batrishyia Binti Pg Hj Muhammad, Sofea Ass’ Safiyah and Abdul Akid bin Abdul Kadir. The Best Content Award was received by Muhammad Andy Riiyan Haikal bin Haji Muhammad Shukri, Adiba Akhtar, Megan Sim Jie En and Summa Marzia Zaman.

The Most Engaging Award was presented to Jed Ng Xiang Zhe, Mabel Sim Jie Yi, Dk Nur Amanina Bazilah Binti Pg Hassanal Hairuddin, Annie Jenelle S. Barawed and Ayska Zulfee, while the Most Outstanding Presentation Award was received by Md Daffaa Dany, Tania Tofazzal Meah and Arshiya Mohamad Ashhad.

What makes St. George’s School even prouder was that out of more than 200 participants, Ayan Ahmed Zakai, Adiba Akhtar and Jed Ng Xiang Zhe received the most prestigious award, that is the Most Outstanding Leader Award! These students showed exemplary performance and extraordinarily participated and led all throughout the training!

Accordingly, on the 13th of February, during the Monday morning assembly, St. George’s School took the time to commend and honour our leaders for their remarkable accomplishments, and the glory that they have brought to not only the school, but our country, Brunei Darussalam as well.

Pada 25 Februari 2023, Jabatan Bahasa Melayu dan Jabatan IRK, Bahagian Rendah telah mengadakan sambutan Ulang Tahun Hari Kebangsaan ke-39 di pekarangan sekolah. Acara dimeriahkan dengan sebahagian pelajar memakai pakaian kebangsaan negara masing-masing.

Acara bermula pada pukul 2:00 petang dengan acara menaikkan bendera oleh dua orang pelajar sambil diiringi lagu kebangsaan Negara Brunei Darussalam. bacaan doa kesyukuran yang telah dipimpin oleh Ustaz Mohidin diikuti ucapan pengetua, Cikgu Janidi Jingan dan lafaz ikrar Hari Kebangsaan yang diketuai oleh Ketua Pelajar Bahagian Rendah, Umar Aiman bin Md Khairul Arifin.

Acara kemuncak pada hari itu ialah perarakan Hari Kebangsan yang diketuai oleh Pengetua, Timbalan Pengetua dan Ketua Guru Bahagian Rendah diiringi dengan 2 buah lagu partriotik berjudul Kibarkan Bendera dan Brunei Bumi Bertuah bagi menaikkan semangat para pelajar. Acara berakhir pada jam 2:45 petang. Semua pelajar sangat teruja pada hari itu!

On 30th January 2023, Sug Teck Ann, President of the Society of Chinese Writers, Calligraphers and Artist Brunei Darussalam, led the 'National Live Spring Festival Calligraphy Competition'. Preparatory Committee Chairman Yang Zhen Sheng called on Madam Alice Ting, the Head of Primary section of St. George’s School, to set up a competition venue for the student group of the school. Besides the student category, an adult category was set up as well to jointly enhance the atmosphere of the calligraphy competition and celebrate the joy of the festive season.

The purpose of holding this competition was to carry forward the traditional art of calligraphy in conjunction with the Spring Festival and Chinese Lunar New Year. The competition had two categories: Chinese and non-Chinese. For the adults, participants were to calligraph couplets of five-characters or seven-characters. As for the student group, four-character auspicious words were the main focus.

The first selection pieces were submitted to the organiser and the final review was to take place on February 4th. The award ceremony for the event is tentatively scheduled for February 18th.

Though it was St. George's School's first time taking part in a calligraphy competition, the atmosphere of the event and participation of students were full of excitement and liveliness. The school looks forward to participating in such calligraphy competitions in the future.

The 28th of January 2023 saw bright smiles and cheers of joy all around as St. George's School held their annual Chinese New Year Celebration after two years of its absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Guest of Honour Mr. Ong Tiong Oh, Chairman of the School Board of Governors Mr. Anthony Liew Vun Chiang, Principal Janidi Jingan, Deputy Principal N.M. Mubarak, members of the School Board of Governors and invited guests were in attendance of the event, as well as parents and students.

The event commenced with a Welcoming Dance by the Secondary Students, followed by the opening remarks from Principal Janidi Jingan. In his remarks, the Principal emphasised the importance of the existing cultural diversity amongst all St. Georgians, as it is part of the school's ongoing efforts to promote tolerance, understanding and respect among the students. Mr. Janidi also touched on the history of the Lunar New Year. The ceremony was then officially launched by the Guest of Honour, Mr. Ong Tiong Oh.

The audience was then treated to lively dance performances by students from the kindergarten, primary and secondary sections, as well as song performances by Abigail Calimbas Olayvar and Sarah Ehyam Enopia Ancero of the secondary section. The kindergarten students were also presented with 'ang pao' from the school. The Guest of Honour and invited guests were invited to present the packets to the eager students. The event came to a close with a Chinese Calligraphy Demo by the Society of Chinese Writers, Calligraphers and Artist, followed by a finale dance number by not only students from all sections, but teachers as well. All guests were invited to enjoy some refreshments after the festivities.

True to what the principal had mentioned in his opening remarks, the values of understanding and respect were ever present amongst the students throughout the event, not to mention the overall unified atmosphere shared by guests, teachers and students alike. The school's utmost appreciation and gratitude goes out to all who graced this event.

St. George's School has performed Student Learning Surveys for all primary and secondary school levels in compliance with the Ministry of Education's directives. A collection of online survey forms called the Student Learning Survey is used to gauge student achievement in English, Mathematics and Science. This analysis will then be utilised to determine how well our Nation has performed overall for each level.

In order to ensure that sessions were run smoothly, our school designed a platform, with the assistance of the school's IT team, that made the survey-taking procedure easier for the students. Even in the lower primary levels, where kids have less computer knowledge, it enabled the school to run the surveys efficiently.

The delivery of the online survey was deemed a success and the school hopes to find more solutions to enhance other aspects of education.

A Yes2Malaysia education exhibition was held at the Parish Hall on Thursday, 2nd February 2023 for a few hours after recess. Year 11 students were in attendance for this exhibition organised by Rexpo. 

Representatives from thirteen universities set up booths at the exhibition. St. George’s O Level students had the chance to meet officials from these Malaysian universities and gathered the information needed to plan for their further studies.

Both students and university officials regarded the exhibition as a successful and a well-organized St. George's School event and the school is pleased to have been able to host Rexpo's first exhibition for the year.
