The Mandarin Department of St. George’s School was delighted to organise the 2026 Moon Cake Festival – Lantern Competition as part of Mandarin Week, held from 7 to 12 September 2026. The engaging cultural activity was designed to inspire students’ interest in Mandarin while deepening their appreciation and understanding of Chinese culture.
The Lantern Competition provided students with a wonderful opportunity to learn Mandarin vocabulary associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival, including 灯笼 (dēnglóng), meaning “lantern,” and 中秋节 (Zhōngqiū Jié), meaning “Mid-Autumn Festival.” Through hands-on lantern-making, students explored creativity, artistic expression and cultural traditions in a fun and meaningful learning environment.
Students in Year 1 and Year 2 completed their lanterns at home with the guidance and support of their parents, creating an opportunity for meaningful parent-child interaction and shared learning. Students from Year 3 to Year 5 created their lanterns during their Mandarin lessons under the guidance of their teachers.
The activity encouraged creativity, teamwork, confidence and active participation, while also strengthening the school community’s appreciation of cultural diversity. It was especially rewarding to see students proudly present their creations and demonstrate what they had learned about Chinese traditions.
