The SGS Boys face four different opponents in their battle for a place in the semi-finals. With the Girls' tournament campaign complete, attention turned to the SGS Boys.
The Boys' team also featured students from Years 7 to 11, bringing together experienced players, returning members from last year's interschool team and seven new players making their debut for the SGS interschool squad. For the new players in particular, this tournament was an opportunity to experience the intensity of competitive basketball and learn what it takes to represent SGS against other schools.
With 10 schools competing in the Boys' category, the teams were divided into two groups of five. SGS was placed in Group B, alongside: JIS, PTEB, Maktab Sains and SMJA. To reach the semi-finals, the boys had to get through all four preliminary-round matches.
And they certainly had a challenging road ahead.
Game 1: A Narrow Opening Defeat
The Boys' first match was a closely contested encounter against Maktab Sains. SGS fought hard, but ultimately fell short by just seven points, finishing the game 69–76. It wasn't the start the team had hoped for, but there were still three more group matches to play. Although the result was disappointing, the tournament was only beginning.
Game 2: A Big Response
The boys responded strongly in their second match against SMJA. Against SMJA, the SGS boys found their rhythm and produced a commanding performance. They finished the game with 107 points, while holding SMJA to 34. One game after a narrow defeat, the boys had their first win of the tournament — and a big one at that.
Game 3: Keeping the Momentum
The momentum continued into the third match against PTEB. Once again, SGS produced a strong performance, scoring more than 100 points. Final score: 112–34. With one preliminary match remaining, the team still had a chance to push for a place in the semi-finals. Everything would come down to the final group match.
Game 4: The Toughest Test
The final group match brought SGS up against JIS. It proved to be a difficult encounter, with JIS eventually taking the win 105–52. With the final whistle, the SGS Boys' preliminary-round campaign came to an end.
Their final group record: 2 WINS and 2 LOSSES.
With those results, SGS boys finished 3rd in Group B and did not progress to the semi-finals. Across the 10 participating schools, the SGS Boys finished 5th overall.
Players to Watch
Among the Boys' squad, Arjay of Year 8B and John of Year 10A, the team captain, were among the team's notable performers. Across four matches, Arjay scored 133 points altogether while John scored 93 points. Their contributions were part of a wider team effort involving all 12 players. And for the seven boys who were new to the interschool team this year, the tournament provided four valuable games of experience that they can carry into future competitions.
Beyond the Final Whistle
The AEWON PPE Interschool Basketball Tournament 2026 has now come to an end for SGS. The results tell one part of the story:
Girls: 5th out of 6 schools
Boys: 5th out of 10 schools
But the numbers don't tell the whole story. They don't show the hours spent training, the nerves before a first interschool match, the encouragement between teammates after a difficult game, the seven boys and four girls who experienced interschool competition for the first time, and they also don't show the returning players who continued to build their experience.
Across the tournament, all 24 players had the opportunity to represent SGS, each contributing to the Basketball Club journey in their own way. For our players, the tournament was about more than where they finished in the standings. It was about learning to compete, working together as a team, learning from setbacks, and discovering what they can achieve when they step onto the court together. The final scores may become part of the tournament record, but the experiences, friendships and lessons gained along the way will stay with our students for much longer.
